5/8/2017 0 Comments Checkpoint 1 So far, I think the book Black and White is very interesting and it really puts you in the perspective of both Eddie and Marcus. I really like how every other chapter it's coming from Eddie, then Marcus and they use black for Marcus and white for Eddie, because those are their nicknames. It's very realistic, because all of it seems like something that can happen in real life if you try to rob someone with a gun because you will get caught and you will have to deal with the consequences and the book does a good job of showing that.
Eddie, who they call white, lives with his mom and his dad but his dad is often gone working. His best friend is Marcus, who they call black. Marcus has a little sister and he lives with his mom and his sister because his dad left them when he was little. Both families didn't have a lot of money and so they both decided to rob people and they soon realized that'd be a big mistake. The book always leaves me wondering so many questions after i'm done reading my checkpoint, such as if Eddie would get caught as Marcus' partner? Will Marcus ever get bail? What is going to happen to both of their basketball careers? This book is filled with constant action and there is never a boring time. It makes you understand how different these two people are but just how close they are too. I think the book Black and White is a great book about friendship and consequences.

3/23/2017 0 Comments Spring break Over spring break, I went on a cruise with my mom, brother, and 6 other families (there were 32 of us all together.) The first port that we went to was in Roatan, and my mom knew a guy who lived there because he and my mom worked together when he still lived in Iowa, so he picked us up and took us to a restaurant. After we ate, he drove us around so we could explore the island a little bit more, and if there´s one thing I´ve learned from being in Roatan, it´s that I´d never want to drive in Roatan, people drive on the left side of the road whenever they feel like it and they´re full of pot holes. Later we went to the beach, and Avery, Ashlyn, and I tried to fly board. (The thing where you step on the platform thing and it jet packs you into the air with water.) After that we went back to the boat and slept because we were all really tired.
The second place we went to was Belize, but we didn´t get off the boat because we were all so tired. But after that we went to Cozumel, and we went to Paradise Beach and they had floating slides and things you could climb on in the middle of the water. We played on those for a while then Ashlyn, Avery, and I took a walk on the beach to try and find a place to get henna, while on the walk I kicked a medal chair and stubbed my middle toe and it hurt a lot, 10/10 would not recommend doing that. After the henna, we packed up and got back on the ship because we ran out of time. The last port we went to was Costa Maya and we went to Maya Beach. It was kind of windy and the sun wasn´t really out so it was a little cold which was a bummer but it was okay because we didn´t end up swimming anyways. We ate a lot of chips and salsa and drank a lot of virgin pina coladas. They had a street full of little shops so me and a few others started walking down there and we learned how to negotiate with the sales people, we got two pairs of sunglasses that were 20$ each for 12$ combined. By the time we were done shopping it was time to go back to the boat so we headed back and slept once again. 1) Some similarities between Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas are that they both had Nazi propaganda in them, making it seem like the camps are more enjoyable then they actually are. Another example on how they´re similar is that the main character in both stories is a young boy, but a difference in that is Ellie, the main character in Night was a Jew and he was in the concentration camps, fully understanding everything that was going on. But Bruno, the main character in The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas was the son of a solider, and thought the camps were a place of fun where they wore pajamas and played all day, he had no idea what was actually going on inside there. Another difference is that in Night, there was no mentioning of Ellie having any interaction with people not in concentration camps, there was not a way for him to communicate with the outside world, but Bruno was able to go to the fences and talk with his friend Schmuel that was in the concentration camp without getting caught.
2) Bruno, the character in The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas was 8 years old, and he had brown hair and blue eyes. Bruno always wanted to explore and he wanted to become an explorer when he became a grown up. He knew about the Holocaust and the camps, but he did not fully understand what was going on in there, even though he always wanted to know. Bruno was very sensitive and caring to everyone, even to strangers, and that didn´t always put him in the best positions. But with Ellie, a character in Night, he did understand what was going on in the camps because he was in one, along with his father. he was 15 years old but he was told to lie about his age so he would appear as a good worker. Ellie never gave up even though he had his moments of thinking it was over. He fought for himself, and for his father who later died. The concentration camps took away almost everything from Ellie, including his faith in god. 3) My understanding of the Holocaust has become way clearer after reading Night and watching the movie. I knew very little about the Holocaust before we started this unit, but now I understand more about it. I learned that the age range for Jews to work in camps was about 15-40, and that the Women and people who were too old or injured to work would go directly to death camps and crematoriums. 4) I liked the movie The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas better than the book Night because I like movies more than books, but I also thought the movie was just a little bit more interesting than the book. 5) I have no other questions about the Holocaust 2/20/2017 0 Comments Night signposts The signpost I wrote about is ´words of the wiser´on page 74. Elie was in the infirmary because he had a problem with his foot, and a older man laying in the bed next to him started giving him advice, and telling him to leave the infirmary before the next selection because it is much worse, and he was talking from experience, and that´s how I knew it was words of the wiser. To answer the question¨What´s the life lesson and how might it affect the character?¨ It affects the character because if he stays in the infirmary he could die because he is not strong enough, and if he stayed in there too long without knowing he might not make it through the next selection, but I don´t think it had a major life lesson.
Another signpost I noticed is on page 100, and it was a memory moment. One year, Elie saw men scrambling for a few bread crumbs that some workers threw, and a few years later he saw a women throw pennies in a well of water, and it reminded him that it could have been a matter of weather the person lived or not when they were fighting for the crumbs, and the women was just freely throwing pennies when there was no need for it. To answer the question ¨Why might this memory be important?¨ It was important because it brought his mind back to the time where he witnessed them fighting over the bread crumbs and now the children were strangling each other for pennies for a game, but to Elie it was not a game. My last signpost was on page 105, and it was a aha moment. Schlomo was about to die and he was telling Elie that he could not go on any longer, but Elie still tried to tell him that he could not just give up like that and that he had to keep fighting and not go to sleep, but then soon after that, Elie realized that he was fighting for a lost cause, he figured out his father has already chosen death and there was nothing he could do about it. To answer the question ¨How might this change things?¨ It changed things because Elie no longer wanted to fight for his father, he started to think of him as more of a burden than a family member, and Elie knew his death was soon to come so it made it easier for him to get over it. If I were President of the United States one of my top priorities would be to make college more affordable for everyone. Most jobs nowadays require a college education in order to apply for that job, but college is so expensive that some people can´t afford it and are unable to get certain jobs because college is so expensive. Yes there are student loans but not everyone has the same amount of money so paying it off could be a bigger problem for some people than others. A way to accomplish this is to make some schools less expensive for the students that can´t afford the higher priced colleges.
Another one of my priorities would be ISIS. ISIS is a huge problem in the united states because they are terrorists attacking different states when nobody is expecting it. If i was president I would put one of my main focuses on trying to stop ISIS rather than other silly things that do not need to be fixed and are not equally as important as stopping people from harming our country. Another priority would be to work for what you have. Some people in America do not work or do not do anything to earn money, but they still get money from the government that comes from other peoples taxes. I do not think that taking money from people who are working hard to make a living, and giving it to someone who does not do anything to make money is fair or right, so I would make it so you would have to work for what you want. 1/12/2017 0 Comments winter breakOver winter break, I had a lot of fun with my friends and family, but was ready to go back to school by the time it was over. The first part of winter break I spent mostly hanging out with my family and my animals and stressing over not having Christmas presents for my friends when Christmas was in 3 days. When Christmas finally came, I spent it with my mom, dad, and my brother Brady. After Christmas, Margaret Puccio came home and we were very excited to hangout so we hung out as much as we could before I left for Arizona like three days after she came home, which was a little upsetting but thats okay. I left for Arizona a few days after Christmas and went to see my grandma and aunt, but my grandma is def in one ear and partly def in the other so its very very hard to talk to her because you basically have to yell in her ear in order of her to actually understand what you're saying, but luckily she's up to date on all the new technology so I usually just texted her. Then we went to Scottsdale Arizona to see my moms friend for the last few days of Arizona and then left the last day of break. I was kind of upset about not spending new years with my friends and coming back the day before school started but its whatever, its okay, and that's that I did over winter break.
12/15/2016 0 Comments Tri 2 blog post 3 In this article, they are talking about the 8 life skills you need to have by the age of 18. They are, to be able to talk to strangers, Find their way around a campus or twon, manage work loads and assignments, contribute to the running of a household, deal with interpersonal problems, cope with ups and downs in their lives, earn and manage money, and take risks. These 8 things are exremely important if you want to be successful as an adult.
Most parents wouldn't think to start making kids deal with these things on their own until its almost too late, so I think this article can help a lot of parents see what they need to have their kids work on and what they are already good at. Right now, I can do some of these things and some i'm still working on, but to the help of my parents, they had me start talking to people and help contribute to the household chores when I was younger so I can improve over the years, but some of these I am not too good at yet, such as earning and managing money, whenever I get money I tend to spend it on whatever I see first, so that's something I can work on. 12/9/2016 0 Comments A rule at school that i don´t likeA rule at school that I don´t like is that we can't wear hats. I mean it is reasonable because teachers and staff need to be able to identify anybody that walks into our school, for saftey purposes but in class we still aren't allowed to wear hats even after we were let inside and we were identifed, which I think is pretty bogus. If we take off the hat/hood right as we walk in so teachers could see that it is a student that goes to South East, and then put it back on I would be fine with that and I think we should be able to do that because someetimes you have an outfit that just works best with a hat, but you aren't allowed to wear a hat so that outfit is kinda just out of the picture, or sometimes you're just having a bad hair day and need a hat to cover your hair up. Or, you might just simply want to wear a hat or a hood.
11/22/2016 0 Comments I am thankful for...This thanksgiving, I am thankful for my animals, Bentley and Lola. (I really hate my cat, but I feel bad if I say I am thankful for my dog without including her.) I mean she can be good sometimes, but that´s besides the point. I have had my dog sense last August, and he´s about a year and six months. Everyday I get home, hes always waiting at the door for me to come inside and play with him, and whenever he sleeps with me he knows that when my first alarm goes off, its time to get up so he comes up by my face and rests his head on my head and breathes heavily so I will get out of bed. (It works the majority of the time.) But without him, I wouldn´t be nearly as happy as I am, so I am very thankful for him.
Along with my dog, (and somewhat my cat) I am thankful for my friends. I really think that I have some of the best friends that anyone could ever have. They´re always there for me when I need them, and they also bring me food, even though I live so far out. Some of them i´ve had since kindergarten, and others I just met last year. I don´t know what I did to deserve them, but I must have done something right. |
